Globiqo blog cover: New to Lagos, how to find events that match your vibe

Moving to Lagos, or coming back after years away, can feel strange in a city this busy. There is always something happening, and everyone seems to already know where to go. You keep hearing about the best nights after they've happened.

The good news is that Lagos is a city that likes new faces. You just need a way in. Here is how to find events that suit you, not just the loudest ones.

Know what you're looking for

"Things to do in Lagos" is too broad to be useful. Start with what you already enjoy:

  • Music: Afrobeats, amapiano, live bands, jazz, alté, gospel.
  • Something calmer: art exhibitions, book readings, film screenings, supper clubs.
  • A good laugh: stand-up comedy nights and open mics.
  • Moving your body: run clubs, dance classes, games nights, football watch parties.
  • Learning and meeting people: tech meetups, creative workshops, business mixers.

Pick two and look for those first. It is much easier to make friends at an event built around something you love than at a huge party where everyone came with their own crew.

Think about where, not just what

Lagos is big, and getting around takes time. A lot of nightlife happens on the Island, around Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Lekki, while the Mainland has its own scene in areas like Ikeja, Yaba and Surulere. Crossing between the two at the wrong time can add hours to your night. When you're starting out, choose events close to where you live, and you'll end up going out a lot more often.

Start small

Big concerts are fun, but they're hard places to meet anyone. Smaller events, like a dinner for 30 people, a workshop or a weekly night, put you in a room with the same faces again and again. Regular events are the best of all: by the third week, you're not new any more.

Follow the people behind the nights you like

When you find a night you enjoy, follow the organiser. Good organisers tend to keep their standard, and they often host other events in the same spirit. On Globiqo you can follow organisers and save events, so the next good night comes to you instead of you having to hunt for it.

Go alone at least once

It sounds hard, but some of the easiest conversations happen when you're not stuck inside your group. Pick a smaller event, arrive on time while it's still quiet, and say hello to whoever is next to you at the bar or in the queue. People are friendlier than you expect.

A few practical things

  • Events often start later than the time on the flyer. Check the event page or ask the organiser for the real start time.
  • Plan your ride home before you go out, especially if you're crossing the bridge late at night.
  • Buy tickets from official links only. Our guide on avoiding fake tickets has the warning signs.
  • Keep a little cash on you for small things, even if you plan to pay by card.

Where to start

Open Globiqo, set your city to Lagos, and look at what's on this weekend. Filter by the things you enjoy and by price, save a few events that look good, and pick one to actually go to. Then do it again next week.

It takes a few weekends to find your people. Once you do, Lagos stops feeling quite so big.
